The best way to visualize history is to view a piece of it. And the easiest way to do this is to visit one of the worlds many castles and castle ruins, which tell stories of love and hate, war and peace.

Castles in Belgium

The Fortified Hulk of Bouillon Castle is situated in Belgium.
Fortified Hulk of Bouillon Castle
Built around AD 900, it was held by the Dukes of Ardennes. The castle was mortgaged by Godefroy de Bouillon to pay for a religious Crusade to the Holy Lands initiating the crusading craze, which would persist for hundreds of years. The castle was eventually captured by the French Army and fortified in the 17th century with elaborate ditches and drawbridges.

Kasteel van Beersel in Belgium is one of the country’s greatest medieval castles.
Kasteel van Beersel
Built of red bricks with tall towers, high walls and a large and deep moat, it was first mentioned historically in the 12th century but the present fortress was constructed in the early 14th century. Built on a flat landscape, it was designed to withstand attack with thick walls peppered with arrow slots and murder holes. It is an attractive fortress, which is maintained now by the state.
