Castles in Sweden
Orebro Castle in Sweden is a squat fortification, which was built to guard the trade routes along the River Svarta in central Sweden.
The original castle was torn down in 1573 by the future King, Charles IX to be replaced with the present building. Sadly, the King had limited time to enjoy the new castle, as he was murdered just a few years after it was built.
Gripsholm Castle in the south of Sweden is the best-known castle in the country, though it is more of a palace than a stronghold.
Originally a 14th century fortress, it was torn down and rebuilt by King Gustav I. In the 1700’s, the self-portrayed ‘actor king,’ King Gustav III, had the castle renovated and a theatre was built within one of the Round Towers. Gripsholm now houses Sweden’s National Collection of Portraits.
