Castles in Spain
Alcazar de Segovia in Spain began life as an Arab fort.
Alcazar means fortress in Arabic and Muslims from North Africa, known as Moors, who occupied southern parts of Spain at that time, built the fort. Built on a cliff-top location in Segovia in the 1200’s, the fort was renovated to become one of the most distinctive castles in Spain. The pointed turrets were an inspiration for the creation of Cinderella Castle by Walt Disney.
The Castillo de Coca is a three-sided castle, which backs onto an impenetrable rock base.
It was completed in 1453 by Spanish Christians and has an attractive hexagonal design of turrets and towers. The French, under Napoleon, successfully besieged it in 1808. The castle is now a tourist attraction, houses a museum, and has been used as a school.
