Castles in Austria
Burg Hohenwerfen is an Austrian castle, built in 1077.
Surrounded by the Alps it sited on a rocky plinth in the heart of a pine valley above the town of Werfen. Burg Hohenwerfen was built to defend Salzburg city and was badly damaged by fire in the early 16th century. It was rebuilt and later used as a prison and military fortress during Nazi times. The castle became world famous when it featured in the classic film ‘The Sound of Music.’
Higgledy-piggledy Hochosterwitz Castle sits in the southernmost Austrian province of Carinthia, on a large rocky hill.
The foundations date back to the 800’s, with major renovations taking place in the 16th century. The castle is renowned for having fourteen fabled gates of defense lying on the steep path to the castle, each presenting a different challenge to intruders. Legend has it that no intruders have ever made it past the fourth gate.
