Castles in Belgium
The Fortified Hulk of Bouillon Castle is situated in Belgium.
Built around AD 900, it was held by the Dukes of Ardennes. The castle was mortgaged by Godefroy de Bouillon to pay for a religious Crusade to the Holy Lands initiating the crusading craze, which would persist for hundreds of years. The castle was eventually captured by the French Army and fortified in the 17th century with elaborate ditches and drawbridges.
Kasteel van Beersel in Belgium is one of the country’s greatest medieval castles.
Built of red bricks with tall towers, high walls and a large and deep moat, it was first mentioned historically in the 12th century but the present fortress was constructed in the early 14th century. Built on a flat landscape, it was designed to withstand attack with thick walls peppered with arrow slots and murder holes. It is an attractive fortress, which is maintained now by the state.
